Single source: every component of an assembly from one manufacturer. Do not mix components from other sources.
Specifier note: Include the next paragraph where the project requires domestic manufacture.
[Domestic manufacture: assemblies machined, assembled and inspected in the United States.]
1.5 Delivery, Storage and Handling
Deliver assemblies in the manufacturer's packaging, labeled with each assembly's mark and length, with the threads protected.
Store off the ground and under cover, away from carbon steel grinding and welding, which can contaminate the stainless surface.
Handle the assemblies so that rods and threads are not bent, nicked or scratched.
Part 2: Products
2.1 Manufacturer
Basis of design: Concentric Tension Systems, 1600 Wallis Ave, Santa Anna, Texas 76878; (325) 400-1274; info@concentrictension.com; www.concentrictension.com. Products: stainless steel tension rod assembly TRA-0750-174-T, with turnbuckle, and TRA-0750-174-NT, without turnbuckle.
Substitutions: [Not permitted.] [As specified in Division 01. A substitute shall have design strengths at least equal to those specified, shown on drawings signed and sealed by a professional engineer, and shall meet the material and dimensional requirements of this section.]
2.2 Performance Requirements
Design strength in static axial tension, determined to AISC 370-21 and shown on drawings signed and sealed by a professional engineer:
LRFD design strength: 33.86 kips.
ASD allowable strength: 22.58 kips.
Governing limit state: tensile rupture of the rod at its 3/4-10 UNC threaded net section. Every clevis, pin and turnbuckle limit state shall be stronger than the rod's.
Loading: static axial tension only. Bending, prying, eccentric, transverse or side loading is not covered unless a licensed engineer evaluates it. Dynamic, cyclic, fatigue, seismic or impact loads shall be converted to an equivalent static load by the Engineer of Record.
Exposure: dry and damp interiors and normally exposed exteriors. Use in corrosive or otherwise aggressive environments requires a project-specific corrosion evaluation by a qualified licensed professional engineer.
2.3 Materials
Clevises, clevis pins, rods, turnbuckles and conical nuts: ASTM A564/A564M Type 630 stainless steel (UNS S17400, 17-4 PH), condition H1150, with a minimum yield strength of 105 ksi, a minimum tensile strength of 135 ksi and a minimum elongation of 16 percent.
Retaining rings: 15-5 PH stainless steel external retaining rings for the 7/8-inch pin, two to each pin, supplied with the assembly.
Threadlocker: Loctite 243, or equal approved by the manufacturer.
2.4 Assemblies
Rod: 3/4-inch diameter, threaded 3/4-10 UNC-2A, left-hand at one end and right-hand at the other, with wrench flats near each end; cut length 12 inches to 20 feet.
Clevises: one left-hand and one right-hand, threaded 3/4-10 UNC-2B, machined from 2-inch round bar with a 5-degree taper toward the rod, slotted for a 3/4-inch grip plate.
Clevis pins: 7/8-inch diameter, grooved for two retaining rings.
[Turnbuckle: 1-1/4-inch diameter, 8-1/4 inches long, threaded right-hand at one end and left-hand at the other, with 1-inch wrench flats, joining two rods.]
[Conical nuts: tapered nuts threaded onto the rod against each clevis [and each end of the turnbuckle], continuing the clevis's taper; decorative, outside the load path.]
Pin-to-pin length: as shown on the Drawings; from 1 foot 5-5/8 inches to 20 feet 5-5/8 inches without a turnbuckle, and from 2 feet 8-7/8 inches to 40 feet 8-7/8 inches with one.
Length adjustment: 3 inches at the clevises[, plus 6 inches at the turnbuckle].
Thread engagement: at least 1 inch at every threaded joint. The last inch of each rod end is marked so the installer can verify engagement in the field.
Grip plate interface, for plates by others:
A 7/8-inch pin, through a hole, bushing, sleeve or insert chosen by the Engineer of Record.
3/4-inch bearing thickness at the pin.
No more than 1-3/8 inches from the pin's center to the plate's edge.
Local bearing at the pin checked for the project's design load, and galvanic corrosion between the stainless parts and the plate considered.
A 3/4-inch ASTM A572 Grade 50 plate develops the assembly's full design strength.
2.5 Finishes
Specifier note: Confirm finish options and their availability with the manufacturer.
Finish: [Stainless steel, as machined.] [Stainless steel, blasted.] [Black powder coat, with the threads masked.]
2.6 Source Quality Control
Machining: every part machined from round bar, concentric with the assembly's axis.
Inspection: parts inspected to the manufacturer's drawings under its quality management system, and the records kept.
Traceability: each part traceable to the mill test report for its heat of steel.
Part 3: Execution
3.1 Examination
Verify that the grip plates and their supports are installed, aligned with the line of each assembly, and meet the grip plate interface requirements.
Verify that each pin-to-pin distance is within the assembly's adjustment range. Do not proceed until conditions are corrected.
3.2 Installation
Install assemblies only as shown on the manufacturer's stamped drawings, with the parts listed. No field machining, welding, drilling or heating, and no other pins or mountings, without the manufacturer's review.
Apply threadlocker to the rod threads before assembly. Do not let it obscure the engagement marks.
Thread each rod end into its fitting, pin each clevis to its grip plate, and install both retaining rings on each pin.
Adjust each assembly's length by turning the rod [or the turnbuckle] until the assembly is taut, or to the tension shown on the Drawings, keeping at least 1 inch of engagement at every joint.
[Run each conical nut against its fitting and snug it.]
3.3 Field Quality Control
At every threaded joint, verify that the marked last inch of the rod is out of sight inside the fitting.
Verify that both retaining rings on each pin are fully seated in their grooves.
3.4 Protection and Cleaning
Protect installed assemblies from weld spatter, grinding sparks and contamination by carbon steel.
Clean stainless steel with mild detergent and water. Do not use carbon steel wool or cleaners containing chlorides.
